Title: Can I sell an asset, that I made with the non-free NGUI?
Post by: vexe on October 20, 2013, 05:04:20 AM
Hi, I just saw this asset here https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/#/content/2081
If you flip through the images, you'll see that NGUI is being used. Now the question is, am I allowed, to use my (paid) NGUI version, to create assets/packages, etc, and then sell them? My guess is, that I can't, but I'm just wondering what that guy did, to get his asset online with NGUI, could it be that he's using the free version? but I don't see any watermarks, that's why I'm asking...

And if I can't, what if I encrypted the NGUI folder/files in someway? and only unencrypt, when the code needs to access something? Idk, just guessing...

Thanks for any info.

You can use the paid version to create your asset. But - when submitting, make sure you don't include NGUI. Also, it is important that you state in the asset description that your asset requires NGUI to work properly. The Asset Store review team already know errors related to NGUI packages and won't investigate them in your submission.

We did this with our tower defense kit so far: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/#/content/3933

Or, you work with the free version and include it in the submission. Then everything works right out of the box... but the free version is quite outdated and really just for testing NGUI. When users want to import their paid version over the free version, they will blow up with errors.

Thanks for your reply. But if I don't include NGUI, how will my asset work? The asset, say an inventory system package, or an RPG starter kit, etc will have the code with it available to the consumers, so...

It won't. That's why you should mention that your asset requires NGUI. Your customers will have to import their own paid version then.

You do realize that "what that guy did" was write NGUI himself.  The publisher is Tasharen Entertainment --- what web site are you on?  Don't work with the limitations of the free version, just make your asset with retail NGUI and then don't select it in asset store tools or delete it before you package it and then include a disclaimer that "Requires NGUI"

SGSK was created before NGUI was. In fact, the SGSK build up there won't work with NGUI, which is why I offer alternate versions of that kit -- one with NGUI integration, and another with NGUI + TNet.

There are plenty of assets up there that use NGUI, but as Baroni mentioned, the best way to go is to not include the NGUI folder when exporting the package for the Asset Store.
