Is NGUI still actively supported?
« on: January 06, 2018, 02:59:05 AM »
I ask because it's been 6 months since the last release and the latest version has a few warnings like this:

UnityEngine.RuntimePlatform.WP8Player' is obsolete:

I know it's minor but I like a warning free environment.

By the way I still actively use NGUI and much prefer it to the standard unity way of doing things.

I'm wondering the same thing.  I posted a question here over a month ago and haven't received a reply.  I'm getting the feeling that AM isn't really supporting this anymore, but I hope he at least states that so we can move on to something else.

It would be nice to know what the plans are for NGUI. I'm waiting to update Unity beyond 2017.1, because that's the newest version that NGUI 3 has been updated for... Maybe an NGUI 4 is in the works?

Seems that NGUI is dead :(

I loved it, but there was only one minor fix update during the whole 2017.

If there is nothing broken, there is nothing to fix!?

I highly doubt that NGUI is dead.  Try the Discord chat (or email) if you need immediate response.

There is a Tasharen discord chat: https://discord.gg/trruSNc

I use it for game dev feedback mainly, but you're welcome to ping me with TNet questions too.

It really needs to be! Unity's GUI is dog slow by comparison, plus I've spent two years slowly getting used to how NGUI works and can't change to another UI now!

So I'm looking for a UI solution for Unity and was thinking about getting NGUI.  Before I buy, I generally poke around the support forums, check out docs, tutorials, etc.  From what I can see on the forum, it seems like there's still plenty of activity.

However, seeing this thread gave me pause.  :-\  It seems feature complete (although I'm sure there's always more that could be added).  My main concern would be ongoing support for newer versions of Unity.  I'm using Unity 2017.3 and it has the latest supported version as 2017.1 on the Asset Store, correct?

Are there any issues that anyone has run into with Unity 2017.3?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Seems like most of the current issues are platform specific.

My target platform is PC/Gameroom/Steam and have not noticed any problems when compiled.  I run the latest version of all assets.  I have seen weird red error messages when exiting editor-playmode... havent looked into them as they are a non-issue.

It is of concern that the author has not responded in 60+ days -- generally there is a response to posts within 2-3 days.  The TNet support guy appears to have vanished as well...

Thanks for the feedback.  I pinged Aren on the Discord channel to get his thoughts (I copied the link for this post in my message).  Perhaps he'll respond soon to give us more information.  If he responds directly to me, I'll post an update here.

I chatted with Aren for a bit on Discord... sounds like that's his preferred communication method for anything that isn't already answered on the forum.  Here was the relevant part for my question about version compatibility:

Okay.  My main question is about Unity version support.  The current version on the Asset Store has been submitted with 2017.1.  Do you know of any issues with newer versions of Unity (I'm currently using Unity 2007.3)?

Aren - Today at 11:22 PM
i use a version that i tried with 2017.3
same one that's in the pro repository

ricke - Today at 11:27 PM
Okay, thanks for the information.  I assume that would be demonstrably the same as the Standard version as far as compatibility is concerned?

Aren - Today at 11:27 PM
for the most part
i made some changes to the popup list class from what i recall

So it sounds like Unity 2017.3+ should be fine and if not, then I'd report it on Discord to him.

Our boy is busy with his Sightseer game and there's only 24 hours in a day. When a major Unity version comes around that breaks everything, that'll be fixed for sure, but until then everything seems to generally be working.

So actively supported, I would say so, but actively developed? Probably not as long as it works fine.

Sure, I would agree. I still use it actively myself, and no one likes warnings.

Btw, what's going on in your signature? I've seen a lot of spam with that <REDACTED> stuff. Would you remove it, so I don't accidentally "purge" your comment? :)

Edit: oh, it's actually just spam (copy of part of OPs post). Bye cucumber.

I've been... neglecting the forums lately, I admit. I've moved all support to Discord back in December (https://discord.gg/tasharen). What I've been telling people (and what the tasharen.com's contact form says) is -- if you can't find the answer to your question by googling it / searching tasharen.com's forums, then you're welcome to ask in discord and I'll respond (and if it's a question specifically to me, be sure to tag me with @Aren so I see it).
