Channels and scenes

So I understand the idea of a channel being an instance of the game and the server only sends RFC's from clients to the host within the same channel.  What I'm not really understanding is why joining a channel requires you to change scenes.  To test are you going back to your menu scene each time and joining the game and then that redirects you to the particular scene you're working on?  That seems extremely cumbersome if I'm doing modifications in a scene and want to join directly into that scene.  Is there any way to accomplish this or am I misunderstanding what channels are for?

Have you tried putting in null as the scene object?
