Images without Atlas?

Is there a way to display images that are not part of an atlas?

I have a lot of character portraits that are shown next to the subtitles when a character talks. It doesn't make sense to have all of them in an atlas (and thus in memory) all the time as I have a lot of them and always only need one of them at once. Is there a simple way to display a sprite without it being part of an atlas?

Same goes for inventory items. Is there a way to create an atlas on the fly that holds just the current items, or what's the suggested way of handling this?
