Seeking a 3D Artist
« on: March 08, 2014, 12:39:55 PM »
One of my current side-projects seems to be taking me into a direction that involves creating modular spaceship parts, which would look much nicer if they were done by a non-programmer. And so... I am looking for a sci-fi artist that would be comfortable making various spaceship parts for a game set in the near future (~2050).

And just to clarify -- I'm not looking for entire spaceships. I am looking for modular parts that can be used to create spaceships instead. This means following a rigid set of constraints for the dimensions of the connecting parts. So if you are a freelance artist who would feel comfortable doing something like that... please get in touch and let me know your rates. :)

It's great, like all Michael O's stuff, but I am not looking for interiors.

What are you looking for? You've not clarified - Is your goal to have a bunch of components like Kerbal Space Program? If so, can you supply the specific details of how the components are connected? Building 3D elements that connect together is not simple, and really requires a clear understanding of the underlying code that connects the components.

Have you established consistent connections between components? If I wanted to add a thruster to a command module is there a way to do that? Can I instead connect a cargo module to that same location?

Not wanting to sound negative, but the brief is really vague and as a 3D artist I'm a bit baffled about what you're trying to accomplish.

If you can more clearly explain what you're trying to accomplish then that would be good. At present your goals are unclear and, as a consequence, unachievable.

KSP would be a good example, yes. Parts would be come in standard set of sizes, designed to be attached at pre-determined points. It'll be easier once I prototype the game using programmer art, then it will be much more obvious what I need and all the dimensions will be clear as well. I'll revisit my search after that's done.

Hah. You did the B9 pack? That's pretty awesome. I was sad when the B9 pack wasn't supported by... was it 23.5 at the time I played last? It had pretty great parts in it, but only like a third of them actually worked. I see the update is much more impressive looking too, nice one. Love the HX!

The system-wise yes, it would work similar, and the closest to what I had in mind is the HX series. Scifi, more edges than curves. Sounds like I should go find the time to play some more KSP soon and check out the new addons.

Yeah, I had some obligations at work and haven't had the time to update the mod for quite a while. It's in good state now though, supporting the latest version and all. By the way, funny story, but some parts from B9 were started as a test assignment before that job: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ArtyomZuev/20130731/197365/Environment_art_and_modeling_in_Kerbal_Space_Program.php

P.S.: Sent you a PM.
