Over lapping Popup Menus

How exactly should I be going about popup menus? Ive got a simple window set up and its hierarchy looks like this http://i.imgur.com/TyFyY.png

The in game window looks like so http://i.imgur.com/5yYes.png

but when I open a popup menu the text from the underlying layer shows through. example: http://i.imgur.com/xyEqu.png

also, that I cannot get that checkbox labeled window to respond at all, no on hover effect no click effect, nothing.

Some help would be great.

This will happen if your text is not in the same atlas as the rest of your UI.

huh well good to know, should probably make that a little more clear.

also any info on the checkbox?

Make sure the checkbox has a collider of proper size (select it, NGUI menu -> Add Collider), that nothing is covering the collider, and that UICamera script attached to your UI's camera has the object's layer marked in the event receiver mask.
