NGUI for UE4?
« on: March 21, 2014, 06:25:10 PM »
Like most people, I am extremely tempted to do more research into Unreal Engine 4 with their new pricing model. I am a UI guy and spend a majority of my days in NGUI. I briefly looked at UE4's UI (SLATE) and had me realizing just how easy I have it with NGUI and Unity. I was wondering if ArenMook might consider making an NGUI for UE4 and releasing it on the Marketplace? Knowing that there was a tool as great as NGUI waiting for me on the otherside would be great.

I realize that most people would want to have Scaleform (GFx) integration for UE4, but I've never been a big fan of Scaleform (DIE FLASH DIE!). However, there doesn't seem to be a great indie UI solution for devs on UE's side?

I don't know yet. UE4 news tempted me as well. CryEngine would be sweet too, but LUA scripting? No chance. C++ source on the other hand... oh yeah. Very tempting.

I would not mind, to pay back $ 99 for the NGUI version for Unreal4. I tested the "UE4" and this very good, the level of ease to work with it, is very close to Unity. Very good.

ArenMook, have a topic on the Marketplace area on Unreal forum, the creator of the Suimono Water plugin, posted there asking if people might want him to do a version of the Unity plugin for Unreal, and was well received.

I'd buy ngui again for ue4 in a heartbeat. Planning to transition to ue4 after a couple of small projects are done.

I would also pay again for NGUI in Unreal Marketplace.
Especially if it came with nodes integrated to the system of the UE4 Blueprints.

Very much +1 here from me, NGUI is getting stronger and stronger - loving the update and I would also certainly pay for UE4 access

I For One Favor NGUI to ScaleForm or canvas/Slate based UI. I would definitely pay again for NGUI in UE4

@ArenMook:

Is this something you plan to do? I'd just like to know if this is on your plate or not so we can decide on which engine to go with for our project. We tried using Slate but it's an abomination compared to the ease-of-use found in NGUI's perfection. We seriously love your work and would like to see it ported to UE4 since that's ideally our primary engine moving forward. We love NGUI enough to double dip!

If this post makes it your way, please consider letting us know if this is something you're actually planning. We see that you've at least considered it and that makes us very excited, but without a clear answer about whether it's coming in some form we can't move forward as we'd like to.

Please and thank you!

It's currently not on my immediate task list. It's something I've been considering, but haven't done anything about. Keep in mind that NGUI was written to be a UI system for Unity, taking full advantage of the existing hierarchy and the ability to add functionality by attaching MonoBehaviours directly to sprites. Repeating similar functionality in Unreal 4 would involve not only redoing NGUI in C++, but would also involve redoing a lot of the functionality present in Unity as well -- so it's not a simple task by any means.

Of course, even just a code port would be difficult in its own rite, making everything work with UE4's rules is another story altogether - after (somewhat successfully) porting one of my smaller personal projects, I know that all too well.

In that case we'll move forward with Slate (ugh) and hope that by the next project we'll have a tool of the same caliber that NGUI is. Thank you very much for the update and we wish you all the best luck if and when you decide to take the plunge!
